The text is a six-page, seventeen-hundred-word paper that analyzes a collection of poems about race in modern America. The paper refers to the literary piece Citizen by Claudia Rankine as an example of what a black woman endures in racist modern America.

As a paper for class, the medium is three pieces of computer-typed white paper. 

As a paper for class, the student uses a computer with a word-processing program to actually type the paper. Using a computer makes the paper neat and readable, and is also required. The actual physical tool used to write the text greatly affects how the text is received.

Author

The author for this analytical research paper is an eighteen-year-old female college student from New York who is attending her first year of classes at the City College of New York in New York, New York. She is Bengali-American and a first-generation student majoring in Communications; Marketing & PR. All this has affected how and what she writes.

Audience

There are two audiences for this paper. The primary and most immediate audience is the student’s professors. The professors are male and female and both teach the first-year writing course that the student is writing the paper for.

The future audience will be the class that is also taking this writing course, coming from all different backgrounds and studying different majors.

Purposes 

The author has a couple of different purposes for writing this analytical paper. Firstly, writing this paper is a class requirement and she must do well on it to get a good grade in the class. Secondly, she can relate to some degree to the topic of this paper because she herself has endured racial hardships. The instructor wants the student to master certain writing processes and principles and will be reading the paper with these concerns in mind. The instructor retains a helpful but expert attitude toward the student’s paper.

Setting

The text is situated within the fifteen-week structure of a typical American university semester. The text occurs within the confines of the curriculum of the student’s first-year writing class. The student’s text is part of a small conversation between her and her instructor in the small community of a first-year writing class.
